Glindell Lavone Rip VanWinkle Obituary (1935

Glindell Lavone "Rip" VanWinkle, age 77, of Mena, Arkansas died Monday, July 29, 2013 at the McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma. He was born on Monday, September 2, 1935 to Frank and Alma Hubbard VanWinkle in Gatesville, Texas. Glindell served in the United States Navy for 21 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer and having served in both the Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his service and considered it a great honor to service the country he loved. After his military career, he worked several different jobs and then moved to Mena. Glindell enjoyed spending time with his sons and also spoiling his dogs. He loved to cook and could make anything, especially his Redeye Gravy. Glindell was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Veterans Administration. Glindell was a loving father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Effie VanWinkle; one brother, Jake VanWinkle and one sister, Christine Reed. Glindell is survived by his three sons, Eugene VanWinkle and wife, Dana of Wichita, Kansas, John VanWinkle of Mena and Michael VanWinkle of Texas; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial services will be Monday, August 5, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Mena Church of God with Brother Mark Lyle officiating. Services are entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.
