Joe Dell Smalley

Joe Dell Smalley, age 91, of Cove, Arkansas died Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at his home. He was born on Monday, October 10, 1927 to Franklin Doctor and Vera Gober Smalley in Celeste, Texas.

Joe was a founding member of the Whole Council of God Church in 1975 and attended faithfully for the rest of his life. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Joe went on to be a truck driver for over 30 years before retiring from Yellow Freight. Joe was proud of the Safe Driver Pens he accrued while truck driving and was a longtime member of the Teamsters. God and family were always his main priorities and gave him the most joy in life. He liked to listen to Gospel music and work in the garden and yard. He also volunteered for the Cove Volunteer Fire Department. Joe was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and a great friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Dewey Smalley, J.D. Smalley, Frank Smalley, G.W. Smalley, and Philip Smalley; three sisters, Ruthie Adamson, Maxine Smalley, and Vera Smalley.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Lorene Smalley of Cove; two sons and daughters in law, Robby and Felicia Smalley of Cove, and David and Cynthia Smalley of Cove; one daughter and son in law, Mary and John Harper of Cove; three sisters, Denzil Coulter of Memphis, Tennessee, Irene Witherspoon of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Anna Jean McCollum of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A private family service was held Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 3:00 P.M. at the Whole Council of God Church Cemetery in Cove with Brother Robby Smalley officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena, Arkansas.

Pallbearers will be Nicholas Dunn, Dennis Colbert, Brian Bennett, Bryan Johnson, Malachi Harper, and Joe Davis.

Honorary pallbearers are David Smalley Jr. and Caleb Smalley.
